Parent Education and Support Programs
PESP builds parenting skills through classroom style curriculums, direct services, workshops, and special events. We use two evidence-based programs for our parenting classes: Chicago Parent Program and Nurturing Parenting Program. We also use a very promising and widely used parenting program, Effective Black Parenting Program.
The Chicago Parent Program was designed to address the needs of parents raising young children from 2-8 years old in underserved communities. The program is delivered over 12 sessions.
Nurturing Parenting Program (NPP) is a 10-week skill building program that is family centered and designed to build nurturing skills as an alternative to less effective child-rearing practices. This program is for parents with children between the ages of 0-8.
Effective Black Parenting Program (EBPP) provides strategies that encourage cultural identity, teach effective communication between family members, promote family values, and build self-esteem in children. This program runs for 15 weeks and is used with small groups of parents with children ages 9 to 17.
PESP also teaches parents various skills they can apply in their everyday lives, including financial literacy, workforce readiness, anger management, and domestic violence prevention. PESP is funded by the District of Columbia’s Child and Family Services Administration.

The program provides grandparents and other kinship caregivers with information, skills, and resources to enhance their ability to effectively parent their relatives. The program consists of eight sessions that focus on topics that include: child development; discipline and guidance; caring for oneself as a caregiver; rebuilding a family; living with teens; legal issues; high risk behaviors; adolescent behaviors and realistic expectations; and advocacy.

My daughter and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again, for the wonderful shopping excursion on this pass Thursday. I was impressed with the professionalism of you and your team and the timely manner from the moment we boarded the beautiful, comfortable coach, the friendly driver and safe journey to and from Wegman’s. The stipend given to purchase food helped tremendously with the outrageous high prices of food today. I am grateful and look forward to participating in future programs the “Family Success Center” will be providing.
I will spread the word.
I really appreciate the gift certificate I earned during the East of the River self-care workshop series to Justina’s Hair Gallery. The hairdo came just in time for the ceremony I was in when my son received recognition from the UDC Firebirds basketball team for being a graduating senior. Thank you East of the River for helping me in my self-care journey.
